One day after shutting out Lakeland 4-0, the Tampa Yankees held the Flying Tigers to 1 run in each game in sweeping Lakeland in a doubleheader on Sunday, winning 4-1 and 8-1. The Flying Tigers were held to four hits in game one including a pair of singles by Jordan Lennerton and doubles by Gustavo Nunez and Kyle Peter. Lennerton homered and doubled in game two while Daniel Fields added a pair of base hits as Lakeland totalled six hits. Jacob Turner tossed struck out seven over five shutout innings, but the effort was wasted as the bullpen had a rare collapse allowing Tampa to score four times for a 4-0 loss to the Yankees. Tampa outhit Lakeland 12-4 as the Yankees shutout the Flying Tigers for the fifth time this season. Jordan Lennerton was held hitless in three at bats to see his hit streak snapped at ten games. The Flying Tigers and the Yankees will see quite a bit of each other over the weekend, playing five games between tonight and Monday. Thanks to rainouts on June 28 and 30 in Tampa, the two clubs will play doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday. Sunday's DH in Tampa will begin at 1 p.m. while Monday's twin-bill to be played in Lakeland, will get underway at 5 p.m. Both doubleheaders will be two seven-inning contests....
Wednesday's doubleheader at Tampa has been rained out. One game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, August 22 at 1 p.m. No information on the second game is available. The Flying Tigers head to Clearwater for a three-night stint. They'll return to Lakeland for a 5pm game on July 4th.
Tampa used three pitchers to limit Lakeland to three hits in a 5-0 win over the Flying Tigers. Jon Kibler pitched well, but was tagged with the loss after allowing one run in 6.0 innings of work with five strikeouts. The Yankees then added four runs in the seventh on four hits. Samir Rijo doubled while Brandon Douglas and Jordan Lennerton accounted for the three Lakeland hits. Tampa scored an unearned in the top of the 14th to hand Lakeland a 6-5 loss in extra innings - the third straight game the Flying Tigers have fallen in extra frames. The Yankees led 5-0 before Lakeland came back with three runs in the seventh on a two RBI-double by Samir Rijo and a run-scoring single by Carmelo Jaime. Brent Wyatt, who would later pitch the 14th inning, tripled with one out in the eighth and then scored on a single by Francisco Martinez to pull Lakeland within one. John Murrian then hit a pinch-hit homer to lead off the ninth to tie the game. Billy Nowlin was held hitless to see his hit streak snapped at 12 games. Tampa holds a slim 7-6 advantage in the series this season and has won the last two meetings. The first four meetings of the season all ended in a shutout with the Yankees taking three of those games.
Thursday night in Tampa was a difficult one for the Flying Tigers. Lakeland was able to notch only a single run on Christopher White's triple in the 2nd. It wasn't a good night for the power in the middle of the Lakeland line up. The bottom of the order knocked three of Lakeland's four hits. The team is off until the 14th at Daytona. With their 9-1 win on Tuesday over Fort Myers coupled with Dunedin's 4-3 loss to St. Lucie, the Flying Tigers are back to 1.5 games out of first place in the North Division. With 12 games to play, Lakeland has two games left with Tampa (30-27), six games against Daytona (28-31) and four with Brevard County (22-25).
It took a while to get it in gear, but Lakeland awoke with six runs in the final three innings to beat Tampa 7-2 for its 15th win in the last 18 games. Trailing 2-1, the Flying Tigers scored four runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth for the win. Kody Kaiser led the charge with three hits to extend his hit streak to 12 games while Rawley Bishop scored three runs. THE FLYING TIGERS (25-18) - Lakeland is back in the thick of the FSL North Division race, now trailing first place Dunedin by 1.5 games and second place Clearwater by 1.0 game. The winner of the first half earns a bid to the league players in September. The Flying Tigers have won seven of their last eight games and 13 of their last 15 contests.
Tampa scored runs in the top of the 9th and 11th innings to ruin a great pitching performance by Charlie Furbush as the Yankees won 2-1 in 11 innings on Saturday. Furbush held Tampa to just two hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Five different Lakeland players each had two hits as the Flying Tigers outhit the Yankees 14-6, but stranded 13 runners. Alden Carrithers and Rawley Bishop each singled and doubles while Kody Kaiser, Bryan Pounds and Chao-Ting Tang each singled twice for Lakeland. Lakeland scored four times in the top of the seventh to back up a strong pitching performance by Adam Wilk as the Flying Tigers defeated Tampa 5-1 for their fourth straight win. Wilk struck out five and held the Yankees to four hits for the win while Alden Carrithers, Rawley Bishop, Bryan Pounds and Josh Workman each had two hits for Lakeland.
