Flying Tigers and Publix Host Easter Egg Hunt Saturday

April 2, 2010

It's not much of a hunt, as over 20,000 plastic eggs will be placed in the field tomorrow at Joker Marchant Stadium. Not much of a hunt, but certainly a lot of fun as children 14 and under race onto the field grabbing eggs for their baskets. According to the Flying Tigers, "the eggs will contain candy, a toy or a number that may be redeemed for special prizes." The cost of the hunt is $2 per child. Proceeds "will benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation of Florida which benefits local youth sports organizations and local charities." The hunt will be divided to two groups based on age. The first group will start after the Kids Fun Run at 10 am. Parking is free. For more information, contact the Flying Tigers at (863) 686-8075 or visit www.LakelandFlyingTigers.com. photo credit: Tom Hagerty for Lakeland Local

Need Canned Pumpkin? Happy Hunting! Public Service Announcement

November 23, 2009

Not sure how many of you do your shopping at Publix on 33 but as of 7pm they were out of cans of pumpkin. Also the Winn-Dixie on Hwy 92 is out as of 7:25pm. Be sure to buy early for your cooking needs. One associate at Winn-Dixie said Wal-mart bought 90 percent of the local supply. If it's true I don't know but he said it with frustration. I called the Highland City Publix to see if it was in stock and yes it is! Happy Holidays to you.

Southgate Publix All-in-One

October 5, 2009

Over at another site, there was a discussion about the reopening of the Southgate Publix. One person questioned the coverage: "It's a grocery store. A. GROCERY. STORE. A place to buy groceries." I've only been here a few years, but it researching the articles about Southgate I found that it has survived and prospered when many contemporary and later shopping districts failed. In the Dixieland community the Southgate Publix isn't just a grocery store. It's a meeting place. We find our neighbors there every time we shop. It's a touchstone of history. 52 years in the same location doesn't happen by accident. We can walk and bike to this store. Generations have done so, though it was built for cars during the time the city wasn't quite up to its edge.

New Southgate Sign

September 18, 2009

Friday afternoon, Local photographer Laura Davis noticed the addition of a new sign for the Southgate shopping center. Without her camera, she still needed to share the image with her friends. So she snapped a Twitpic with her cameraphone. A few hours later she is sharing it with you. Ed. Note: Publix is scheduled to re-open the Southgate location on October 1st. Photo (c) Laura Davis

Sneak peak into a new Diner

July 8, 2009

A new diner will open soon and I have a few pictures of the inside. If you drive by it now the windows have brown paper on them. It will join the other business in the Highland City shopping plaza such as the Subway, Chinese food, a chiropractor’s office, a party store and of course Publix. Keep reading to find out the name and see the pictures.

10 Ways To Reuse Your Plastic Bags

December 31, 2008

As part of my 2008 New Year goals I wanted to use less plastic bags. I think I did pretty well only using 26 plastic bags, which means I used the green bags and saved 123 plastic ones (yes I kept track.) I did not plan on shopping at this store tonight so I did [...]

Another One Bites the Dust

October 24, 2008

We've all heard by now that the Southgate Publix is scheduled for demolition and remodeling. I spoke to Shannon Patten, a Publix spokeswoman, today, and she said work is anticipated to begin before the end of the year. Shannon and I spoke a few times recently while I was writing an article for a statewide publication about the famous ceramic tile murals that have graced the exterior of about 200 Publix stores through the years. These murals were painted by the delightful Polk County artist Pati Mills.
