Support Your Candidate- Buy A Latte

October 7, 2008

I opened my Inbox this morning and what did I see? A really a great move toward bringing some levity to a tense election season. I didn’t change a word because I loved every word of this little “shameless attempt” from my friends at Black & Brew in Downtown Lakeland.  Support Your Candidate. Obama & [...]

What’cha Think Hair Lickers?

October 7, 2008

Read the whole thing. There's a dangerous social sickness at work. Here's an excerpt: "Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy." Keep in mind, while McPalin seems to think their collapsing chances hinge entirely on whipping up mobs over Barack Hussein Obama's scary name, hue, and acquaintances, that this woman is married to a man who was an avowed secessionist - that is, traitor - for more than a decade. Troubling associations, indeed. Wait, he drives a snowmobile, so that doesn't count. And some hair licker defend this Palin gem: "As we send our young men and women overseas in a war zone to fight for democracy and freedoms, including freedom of the press, we've really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting the freedom of the press, and then the press, though not taking advantage and exploiting a situation, perhaps they would want to capture and abuse the privilege. We just want truth, we want fairness, we want balance." Come on, somebody out there in the shrinking Palin wing defend her take that freedom of the press is a privilege to abuse. Pretty please?

Some Voter Registration News

October 6, 2008

Polk Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards came to my Kiwanis Club Friday and gave a good talk about the constitutional and charter amendments on the ballot this year. (For my part, I urge everyone to vote against all of them except the measures making it harder to amend the constitution or charter by referendum. But then I'm a small-r republican in that sense.) Afterward, she and I chatted about voter registration issues. I've been hearing quite a bit about the controversial rule, which took effect Sept. 8, requiring that new registrations match precisely social security numbers or addresses on driver licenses.

Demand Honesty. Love Your Neighbors And Friends. Vote No On 2.

October 5, 2008

I was walking around Lake Morton with my wife, daughter, and little boy Wednesday evening when we came across a new political yard sign: "Yes on 2: One man, one woman," it read. It's in a very prominent location, and you can't miss it. (In fact, since I first saw it, someone has defaced the sign. I want to make it clear that nothing I write here endorses that type of behavior. It's important that we respect other people's rights and dignity even if they seek to deny rights and dignity to others.)

Biden Time?

October 4, 2008

A well-placed source tells me Joe Biden is likely to come to Lakeland Tuesday afternoon for what sounds like a rally, possibly somewhere within the Lake Mirror complex....

Hair Lick Voters + Polite Silence = CSX = $700B Bailout = Private Profit, Socialized Risk

Lorrie got busy with school, work, and other household-related matters, and she says she won't be able to finish answering my questions. That's fine. I want to make a couple of points in bringing this to a close.

S-Lake Wales?

August 29, 2008

Take a look at the lead paragraph in the Orlando Sentinel's latest story on Polk County's favorite son, J. D. Alexander. Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, said Monday he's talked to Gov. Charlie Crist in recent weeks about keeping the majority of U.S. Sugar Corp.'s agricultural lands in the sugar-growing business after the state finalizes its $1.75 billion buy-out of the company. Waiting for Obama to arrive

August 3, 2008

Looking at Josh’s post about the impact of Barack Obama’s arrival in Lakeland I decided to see if I caught him in any of the photos from my little camera. He’s actually on the far left of the photo there. You’ll have to go to the original to barely see Obama’s face as he walks [...]

Should I Stay, or Should I Go?

August 1, 2008

If you’ve followed the Obama rumors you’re learned how tentative such plans are. At best, you get bits and pieces of what everyone is planning. The players keep information close to their chest. When Billy wrote about Obama coming to Lakeland I thought it was nice Lakeland would get a look from the national press, [...]

Obama To Lakeland On Friday?

July 29, 2008

There are rumors afoot that Barack Obama is coming to Lakeland on Friday, perhaps for the First Friday gathering downtown. (I know what you’re thinking, but the source for this is not the woman I’m married to, who happens to organize First Friday. I’ve asked her, and she’s heard nothing official or unofficial from the [...]
