If you’re one of those parents that thinks that creativity and art are important for your child’s development, then you are lucky to live in Lakeland. There are several opportunities offered by our local, non-profit arts organizations that will expose your child to visual arts, dance, theatre, literacy, and more:

Explorations V
Summer Camp 2010 will be held for nine weeks, June 14 through August 13. This summer, Explorations V is introducing a new camp for children 4 & 5 years of age. Called Story Book Camp, it will feature fun topics like Beach Babies!, Movers & Shakers!, Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!, Mini-Cooks and more. The Museum will also continue to offer X5 Adventure Camp for 6-12 year olds with sessions such as Get Fit!, Hollywood Producer!, Masters of Art and CSI X5: Crime Science. Both camps have weekly themes and include hands-on activities, museum exploration, outdoor play, and snack creation.

Children can be registered for full day (9am-5pm) or half day (9am-1pm/1-5pm) camps. Full day pricing for museum members is $125 per child per week. The full day fee for non-members is $150 per child per week. Half day sessions are $65 per child per week for museum members and $80 per child per week for non-members. Sibling discounts are available. Early drop-off and late pick up can be arranged for an additional fee. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required to hold a place in camp.

To register by phone using a credit card or to obtain additional information call the museum at 863-687-3869.

Florida Dance Theatre
Three options are available for children (and adults!) with a desire to learn how to dance. First is 10th Annual Summer Youth Dance Camp for boys and girls ages 6-10. This camp is part of the “DANCE DIMENSIONS “ program funded by The George W. Jenkins Fund from within The Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland. Camp runs July 5 – 30 and consists of 4 sessions that are one week long each.
Classes run from 9:00am to 5:00pm and include include Ballet, Musical Theatre Jazz, HipHop, Acting, Ethnic Dances, and Art.

Regular Tuition $150 per week, but camp is FREE to students who qualify for the Free School Lunch Program. Students that qualify for the reduced lunch program can receive a discount. In order to qualify for the free or reduced tuition, parents will need to supply proof of participation in the Free or Reduced School Lunch Programs. Another great opportunity is available to needy students: thirty students on the free school lunch program will be chosen to receive a scholarship for the 2010-2011 season of classes at the Academy of Florida Dance Theatre.

The second option from Florida Dance Theatre is the Summer Intensive. This is two weeks of all day, intense training for intermediate, advanced, and pre-professional students who want to push their skills. The Junior Intensive for ages 6 – 9, and the Junior Division for ages 7 – 14 will run June 14 -26 . The Senior Division for ages 15 -25 will run June 21 – July 2. Students interested in the Summer Intensive will need to audition for placement.

Finally, in July, FDT will be offering open classes for all ages in the evenings. These classes will take place July 12 – August 6, and will include Pre Ballet, Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop.

For more information or to register for either of these three options, call Florida Dance Theatre at 863-802-0399.

Lakeland Community Theatre
For children who are more theatrically inclined, Lakeland Community Theatre’s Summer Camp will take place July 19 – August 6. Classes include Improvisation, Dance, Music, Vocal Technique, Movement, Audition Technique, and more. Children ages 11 – 15 can participate all three weeks, while classes for ages 6 – 10 are only offered in July.

Tuition for July 19 – 23, ages 6 – 15, is $199. For July 19 -30, ages 6 – 15, is $385. For 11 – 15 year olds to participate in week three only, the cost is $199, but they can enroll in all three weeks for $499. Special rates also available based on need and families enrolling multiple students. Two need-based scholarships are also available. Call 603-7529 or visit www.lakelandcommunitytheatre.com to sign up or get more information.

Polk Museum of Art
PMoA’s SummerArt Camp for children ages 5 – 13 will take place June 14 – August 6. Sessions are two weeks long each, and four sessions will be offered during the summer. Students may enroll for one, two or three classes per day. This year, the theme for SummerArt Camp is “Modern Art… Up, Up, and Away!” and each session will focus on the fun, creative, and interesting movements that took place in 20th century art. Topics will include everything from Art Nouveau, Cubism, Surrealism, and Minimalism to Pop Art and Computer Art, and classes will be offered in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Wearable Art, Digital Photography, Performance Play, and more.

Tuition for SummerArt Camp is $100 per class, per student for Museum members, and $115 per class, per student for non-members. Discounts are given when a student takes more than one class.

For more information or to enroll, call 863-688-5423 or visit www.PolkMuseumofArt.org/classes.

Okay parents, pick up those phones, check those websites, and get your kids doing something artistic this summer!

In a couple of weeks, Polk Museum of Art will open two new exhibitions — both of which are inspired by flowers in some way — and at least one of them is guaranteed to appeal to those of you who prefer to recognize what you’re seeing when you look at a painting.

The first one is simply titled, Joseph Raffael, and here’s where it gets impressive: these watercolor paintings of flowers are around 5 feet tall by 7 feet wide. If you’ve ever attempted to paint with watercolor, you know how amazing it is that he works on that scale. For the 10 paintings in this exhibition, the artist, Joseph Raffael (in case you didn’t figure that out by the name of the show), worked from bouquets of flowers that he grows in his garden in the South of France. His style is not photo-realistic, nor is it impressionistic, but falls somewhere in between the two.

Artwork by Kenneth Treister. Courtesy of the artist.

The second exhibition, Kenneth Treister: The Colors of Nature features a series of paintings by Winter Haven architect and sculptor Kenneth Treister (bet you didn’t guess that one, either). These paintings are more abstract that Raffael’s and almost fall into the art historical category of color field painting. While Treister also is inspired by his garden and landscape, he prefers not to paint the details of the plants. Instead, you get the idea that he’s been squinting his eyes and allowing the scenery to blur together into dobs of color. The exhibition will consist of several canvases, but will be presented to the viewer as a single piece of artwork.

Both exhibitions are on display January 23 – April 4.

The opening reception for the exhibitions is on January 22 at 6:00pm, and will begin with a lecture about Joseph Raffael by Nancy Hoffman, the exhibition organizer and owner of Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York City. Admission to the reception is free for Museum members and $10 for non-members.

A separate reception/book signing will be held in honor of Kenneth Treister on February 11 at 6:30pm, at which time he will speak about his work. After the lecture, he will be available to sign copies of his newly published book, Havana Forever: A Pictorial and Cultural History of an Unforgettable City. Admission to that reception is also free for Museum members, and $10 for non-members.

Right off the presses and just in time for Lakelanders’ Christmas stockings is a great coffee table book featuring the Polk Museum of Art.

PMoA@43: Forty-Three Years of Service to Minds and Hearts. Polk Museum of Art: 1966-2009 (ISBN: 978-0-9794814-5-1) was authored by Dr. James Gordon Rogers and Ann Gurley Rogers, respectively a Professor of Art History and a Library Specialist at Florida Southern College. It relates the near half-a-century old history of the PMoA, with its various missions, locations and activities inside and outside the museum proper. There are as well a lot of people stories and histories of the directors, curators, benefactors and volunteers. Museum and other local archives as well as personal interviews have been used to wrote and illustrate the text. The book helpfully lists various persons involved with the museum throughout the years and contains a name index.

The 13 inch by 11 inch, 189 pages hardcover sells for $50 ($40 for Museum members). The book is available at the Museum store; you can also order a copy online.

In reality, it all started this weekend with the Downtown Art Walk this past weekend, which I heard was really nice — particularly since the weather was so beautiful. But this week will continue to offer something for every arts and culture lover in town!

Tomorrow night, November 17, Polk Theatre will host the next installment of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. This week, Producer/Director Katrina Brown will be in town for the screening and talk-back of her film Traces of the Trade. The film tells the story of Brown’s ancestors, the largest slave-trading family in New England, and how her family is now struggling with taking public action given what they now know. The film starts at 7:30, and regular film admission prices apply.

At the same time, for you classical music lovers, Imperial Symphony Orchestra will present its Symphonic Reflections Masterworks concert at the Lakeland Center’s Youkey Theater. The concert will feature the I Vespri Siciliani Overture by Giuseppi Verdi, Rhapsody for Clarinet and Orchestra by Claude Debussy featuring the ISO’s own Ann Satterfield on clarinet, and Rustic Wedding Symphony by Karl Goldmark. Contact the ISO for ticket information: 834-8111.

Thursday, the 19th, is a crazy arts day.

The first event is Polk Museum of Art’s Gems & Jewels Artist Market. This event runs 10am – 4pm in the Museum’s lobby and student gallery, and will feature seven local and regional jewelry and wearables artists. Stop by on your lunch break to shop for gifts for the jewelry lovers in your life. Admission is free.

That evening, you music lovers have two choices. The Bacon Brothers Band will be performing at Polk Theatre, and local band Juniper RED will be the opening act. In case you haven’t heard yet, the Bacon Brothers are actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael Bacon. This is your chance to discover your own Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, so take advantage of it! Tickets start at $25, and the performance starts at 7:30.

At the same time, the Harrison School for the Arts will present its Fall Symphony Orchestra Concert. Contact the school’s box office for tickets: 499-2939 or visit their website.

On Friday, Polk Museum of Art will have a Curator Tour of the exhibition The Surreal Photography of Jerry Uelsmann, 12:15 – 1:00pm. Daniel E. Stetson, the Museum’s Executive Director, will lead the tour, which is included with Museum admission. Later that evening, the Museum will host its quarterly View & Review. This time, the event is geared toward middle and high school students who are preparing their portfolios for art school admission. Artist Rick Olivo will be the guest critic. Young artists should pre-register by calling the Museum’s Education Department at 863-688-5423. The cost is $15 for the artist, and $5 for audience members.

Saturday will be hopping as well. Polk Museum of Art will be hosting two children’s events: Breakfast with Santa, and the Elves Shelves Gift Shoppe. Breakfast with Santa is an opportunity for the kids to literally have breakfast with Santa, and then enjoy a fun art workshop afterward. It starts at 9:00am and costs $15 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration is required. The Elves Shelves Gift Shoppe will be open throughout the day. This special secret shop is just for kids and will feature low-cost gifts that they can pick out for family and friends. They’ll also have the opportunity to make their own wrapping paper to wrap their selections. The Shop will be open 9:00am 3:00pm and admission is free.

Explorations V will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Saturday with their Pilgrim Day. Bring the kids for early American activities like rope making, candle dipping, butter churning, quill writing, and building tin can lanterns. Pilgrim Day is included with regular admission.

Whew!! What an art-filled week! It’s going to be fun.

Busy Week Ahead for Lakeland’s Arts Scene

Lakeland Local and Metro I4 News have a new design.
When was the last time you visited?

I found out yesterday that there’s a small series of art events happening at Black & Brew this month. Lakeland.Art.Music is co-sponsored by Vine Community and First Presbyterian Church, but don’t expect a sermon or prayer circle. This is just a fun, free series for art and music lovers. To quote the organizers, “Since we have some excellent local artists and musicians who are a part of our community, doing something like this just seemed natural.”

Yeah, Lakeland’s got some talent! And a vibrant art scene to boot. But I digress.

Each event is on a Thursday evening, 7-9pm, and will include an exhibition of artwork by a local artist accompanied by a performance by a local musician. Admission is free, but you’re encouraged by the sponsors to be good patrons of Black & Brew to thank them for hosting the events. Vine and First Presbyterian are also taking donations for the Beth-el migrant farmworker ministry in Wimauma, Florida.

The first event is on October 8 (this Thursday!) 7-9pm and will feature Kim Cleghorn’s “Ticklish Mermaid” paintings and alt-rock/folk by Chad and Jess Kostella. Future line-ups will be announced later.

This one’s for all you independent film buffs out there: Polk Theatre has recently been awarded the honor of being a venue for the Southern Arts Federation’s Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Films. As only one of three theaters in the state (and the only one on the West Coast of the state) given this honor, Polk Theatre will also receive a small stipend of support from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Southern Art Federation. Each film screening will include a Q&A session with the Producer/Director that will be facilitated by David DeBorde, award winning Lakeland filmmaker and Film Professor at Southeastern University.

The first film in the series screens this Friday night, starting at 7:30pm. Automorphosis is a documentary about people who turn their cars into moving artwork. Harold Blank, the film’s producer and director, will be at the screening to answer questions from the audience afterward. Tickets are $6 at the door.

For more information about the film or the award, be sure to contact Polk Theatre.

There are two great, family-oriented events taking place next Saturday, and you should make plans to attend at least one of them — preferably both!

The first one is Polk Museum of Art’s annual Family Day. The fun runs from 11am – 3pm, with the theme of “Going Green.” Art activities and projects will be eco-friendly, and several of the entertainers have gotten into the spirit as well. The always popular Luis Campaneria will perform a recycled magic show, and Didgeridoo Down Under will play on instruments made from old PVC pipes. But the best part of the event is that more than 350 bags of art supplies will be given away to school age children! The entire event is FREE so you have no excuse for not attending.

The second one, and, truthfully, the one I’m most looking forward to since I don’t have kids and it’s featuring my favorite all-time movie, is Florida Dance Theatre’s and Polk Theatre’s joint screening of “Grease.” If that wasn’t fun enough, they’re making it a sing-along event, complete with dancers on the stage while the movie is running. Think “Rocky Horror Picture Show” but child-friendly. The movie starts at 6 and you’re encouraged to dress in your 1950s finest. There’s even a Sock Hop on the stage prior to the movie. Tickets are only $10 each ($8 for kids under 12).

It’s going to be a fun day! I hope to see you out there.

Polk Museum of Art will receive $50,000 to be used toward retention and employment of outreach teachers and guest artists during this economic downturn.

Polk Museum of Art is one of only 3 museums in the state, and one of only 14 arts organizations in Florida to receive one of these grants from the NEA. The one-time NEA grants were awarded on a competitive basis, and only organizations that had received an NEA grant in the past four years were eligible to apply.

Wow. If there’s one thing you can say about the summer — other than that it’s REALLY hot — it’s that the local arts organizations really cut back on their schedules. Other than summer camps… But, there are two things coming up very soon that are worthy of note. I’ll write about one here, and the second one in another poster later.

I hope you’ve been over to PMoA to see the new exhibitions. One of them, Silver Linings: Delicate Drawings by Carol Prusa is really captivating. (I even asked the Curator how much one of the smaller ones cost. Let’s just say it’s not in my budget.) And, lucky for Lakeland, the artist will be here for the reception on July 24 at 5:30pm.

She’ll be talking about her work and her influences, which, if you’re a bit of a nerdy geek like me, you’ll find super exciting: theoretical, astro, and quantum physics; cellular biology; medical illustrations; and philosphy, for example.

The lecture starts at 6:00pm and the cost to attend the lecture and reception is $10. If you’re a Museum member, it’s free.

Clark Whittington, the founder of Art-O-Mat will be at the Museum on Saturday, June 27, to talk about the machines and how artists can have their work sold in them. That talk/presentation starts at 10:30 and is free with museum admission. I’ve heard that Clark is pretty entertaining to listen to.

Polk Museum of Art is opening three new exhibitions in June, and the first one is Shelter, an exhibition of works from the Museum’s permanent collection. Since I’ve been having a hard time putting the concept behind this exhibition into my own words, I’m just going to quote PMoA’s Curator of Art, Todd Behrens:

“The idea of a shelter can be anything from a physical enclosure to emotional security. Sometimes shelter is a state of mind in which one feels safe and protected. Sometimes shelter is simply a physical structure that leads to that state of mind.”

Shelter will be up (no pun intended!) June 7 – August 23 in the Museum’s Perkins Gallery, also known as the hallway gallery. Keep in mind that PMoA reduces its hours in the summer: Tues. – Sat. 10am – 4pm and closed Sundays, Mondays and major holidays.

If you know Daniel E. Stetson, Polk Museum of Art’s Executive Director, you know that using the word “talkative” to describe him is an understatement. The man is extremely passionate about art and the arts, but ironically, he’s often very reluctant to review or give criticism of artists’ work. So, it’s a rare and exciting treat to know that he has agreed to be the guest critic at PMoA’s next View & Review on May 15 at 6:00pm.

Museum Directors and Curators are kind of like the rock stars of the Museum world. They’re the ones that artists are dying to get their work in front of, even if it’s just for a moment. So, artists, here’s your chance! Your art will get one on one attention and a captive audience with “the man.” Take advantage of it! Just don’t expect an exhibition out of the deal. Those are a rare prize and it takes some exceptional artwork to get that kind of response.

This month’s View & Review will be held on Friday, May 15 at 6:00pm. The cost for an artist to have a piece reviewed is $15 per piece, but any art lover is invited to come be a part of the conversation for $5 per person. There’s also a cash bar. To register as an artist, call 863-688-5423, or click here to register online. If you just want to watch, show up at the door.

First, something involving kids:

Next, for lovers of Folk Art:

And finally, one I don’t have a flyer for: Lakeland Community Theatre’s production of Macbeth opens tonight at Lake Mirror Theatre. I’m not sure if this is a historical production or an updated “modernized” version (like the recent movie). Either way, this classic is worth watching. It runs through next weekend, May 2, so be sure to catch it!

Looks like Polk Museum of Art is planning a day to celebrate its folk art exhibition, Unfiltered: Self-Taught Artists from the Permanent Collection. I don’t know very many details at this point, but I do know that it’s going to be on Saturday, April 25, and it will start with a workshop with Lakeland folk artist Jack “Mr. B” Beverland at 11:00am, and then a folk art sale from noon until 2pm in the Museum’s parking lot. There will also be a very light reception in the Museum’s lobby during that time.

Local folk artist and folk art advocate/fanatic Rodney Hardee is helping to organize everything. He’s a very, very nice guy, so it’s worth coming to the event just to meet him. We’re still firming up which artists are participating, but there are actually a lot of really good folk artists in this area, so it should be a great opportunity to pick up some new pieces for your private collection. The good news about folk art is that it’s generally fairly inexpensive, so don’t let the idea that you can’t afford it scare you off. You could probably find a real gem for about $25. Be sure to stop by and check it out.

Polk Museum of Art is trying something new for the next couple of months. On Thursday evenings, they’re going to stay open until 8pm so that more people will have a chance to see the really crazy cool exhibition of Gregory Barsamian’s artwork. The best part is that Museum members will be able to see the exhibition for free from 5-8 on those nights, and these hours are in effect until June 4.

Beyond that, they’re also planning what sounds like a potentially cool program for the night of April 16. Florida Southern College Department of Psychology faculty and students will be conducting a discussion of what actually happens in your brain when you’re looking at Barsamians work. Apparently, it isn’t as simple as seeing movement; there are some interesting processes taking place to allow you to interpret what’s happening. Florida Southern students will be admitted FREE for this program. It starts at 6:30pm and should only last about an hour.

I was just glancing at Art-i-Facts magazine, and there’s a lot happening in the arts this weekend. But I’m going to focus on just two — the two, in fact, that I will be attending: View & Review at Polk Museum of Art and Platform Art Party over at PCC Lakeland Campus.

First, there’s View & Review. I know, I know. I work at the Museum so I’m always talking about what it’s doing, but this is one of the events we host that I DON’T have to come to. If I really wanted to, I could hand the camera to someone else and go party at Molly’s or something. But, I don’t do that because I enjoy the View & Reviews. They’re a pretty fun, intelligent, inspiring way to spend my Friday night. Even if I am behind a camera most of the time. Lucky for you, because of this fact, I’ll have pictures later! Anyway, it’s $5 to get in, and we’ll have a small cash bar. I’d eat dinner beforehand, though, because all we have is snack mix.

Second, there’s Platform Art Party. Platform has quickly grown into a pretty big art event. I think I heard that they’ve been getting something like 600 people at each one. Wow. I haven’t been to one for years — since before I quit making art and back when I actually exhibited my work. I even showed my work at one of the first ones. So, I was pretty happy that this one falls into a good time for my schedule. I’ve volunteered to work the volunteer check-in table (ironcally enough) from 7:30 – 9:30, so stop by and say hi if you can. If I remember to, I’ll drag a camera along and take a few shots to share. It’s $20 at the door for adults, and students get a discount, but admission includes a couple of drink tickets, I think.

I haven’t mentioned, but I will, that pianist André Watts will be at FSC Saturday night. $35 per person. And if you feel like driving, Ridge Art is hosting its annual Central Park Art Festival in Winter Haven.

Okay, we’re good. You’re informed and I’m ready for a fun weekend. I’ll see you around!

This Weekend is Full of Art

Lakeland Local and Metro I4 News have a new design.
When was the last time you visited?
