Does Anyone Care about the SPCA?

January 26, 2009

Here I stand, solidly on my soap box. Gather round, brethren. This is the point where I attempt to cast out the demons of complacency and apathy. If you could hear this blog post, you would know that I have my Jimmy Swaggart voice on and my southern gospel choir is rockin’ it in the [...]

Starry Way

January 16, 2009

If you are on Lemon Street headed toward the Lakeland Center you will be passing by a new street sign that was installed in the alley behind  the Polk Theatre.  Representatives from the Polk Theatre met with the city officials and the process began to find the history of the alley. Thanks to some investigating [...]

Salvation Army Kettle Kick Off

November 24, 2008

It's that time of year again. Outside many stores you will hear the jingling of bells. These bells are different because they beckon for your spare change to be dropped in the infamous red kettle. Every year the Salvation Army collects money to provide for people at Thanksgiving and Christmas. To check out the full history of the kettle link to the Salvation Army website. The Polk County Salvation Army is inviting everyone to join in for the 2008 Kettle Kick Off. The group will gather at Lakeside Village Shopping Center on Friday, November 28, the day after Thanksgiving, from 6-8pm.

Life Care Workshops – “Care Assurance”

November 3, 2008

Are you confused about the difference between a living will, a health care surrogate, an advance directive, a durable power of attorney and a DNR? If so, you're not alone. This past week I attended a free seminar, "Life Care Workshops" sponsored by the Lakeland Regional Medical Center (LRMC) Ethics Committee and funded through the LRMC foundation. Although I was more then half the age of most people at the workshop I found the information enlightening and quite helpful. It was helpful in learning the maze for planning for your future (and your parent's future) as they grow in age.

High School Students Have Vision

September 30, 2008

This isn't up to date news, but I thought worthy of a recap, albeit two weeks late. I was invited to a gathering of 100+ high school students at Southeastern University on September 16. Who could orchestrate such an event? (Let me tell you the logistics I am sure were fun with all the cuts in transportation and field trip funding!) The answer would be Lakeland Vision. Hopefully at this point you are not wondering what Lakeland Vision is, but if you are check out Chuck's earlier post.

Lake Hollingsworth HIV Awareness Event

December 1, 2006

If you drove or ran around Lake Hollingsworth this morning you noticed small signs had sprouted up all around the lake. They’re part of a program in recognition of World Aids Day. A local group, Friends-Together, placed the signs to increase awareness of the world-wide HIV/AIDS problem and how we can help in Lakeland. The [...]

Homeless Coalition of Polk County

November 28, 2006

The Homeless Coalition of Polk County is looking for volunteers to count the homeless population of Lakeland and the rest of Polk County. Last year’s count found 2,129 homeless people in the county. Why the count? Evidently there is a Congressional mandate to collect such data. I’d bet that the amount of cash Congress directs [...]
