Another neat event was just brought to my attention: Mad Agnes, a folk/rock/Celtic fusion band, will be performing at Arts on the Park on Saturday, Feburary 7 at 7pm. Tickets are $15 each and you can get more info by calling Arts on the Park at 680-2787.
Most of the time, the arts organizations in Lakeland try hard not to schedule major events on top of each other. We know that we share many of the same patrons and visitors, and it hurts us all when we have a conflict. But it doesn’t always work out. Sometimes, we force you all to [...]
One of the things I’ve heard before, from people who aren’t terribly familiar with Polk Museum of Art and everything it does, is, “You guys should offer art classes.” Well, prayers are answered! (Actually, we’ve been offering classes for years, but that’s not the point.) Spring Art classes will start at the Museum on February 3rd. [...]
The Americom Pro-Rodeo Classic presented by Mid-Florida (credit union) will be at The Lakeland Center Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17. I went last year and it was awesome! I just finished taking some pictures of Polk Museum of Art’s event that was held tonight. Atlanta artist Radcliffe Bailey was in town, and the Museum had a small reception for him. The evening started with Todd Behrens, the Curator of Art, asking Radcliffe some questions, and the conversation went from there. Radcliffe was really interesting [...]

It’s nice to know that even in these economic times, there are businesses out there that are still able — and, more importantly, willing — to support local arts and non-profit organizations. And given how hard most of the banking industry has been hit, it’s an especially big piece of news when you find out [...]
Radcliffe Bailey, one of the most prominent African-American artists working in the South, will be at Polk Museum of Art next month to talk about his artwork. A Conversation with Radcliffe Bailey will be held on Friday, January 9, at 6:00pm. Todd Behrens, the Curator of Art, will be guiding the evening in an interview format. [...]
A couple of weeks ago, Chuck asked me if I wanted to be a guest blogger on Lakeland Local to talk about the arts in Downtown Lakeland. Since then, my posts have been about Polk Museum of Art, since that’s what I have an intimate knowledge about. Today, though, I want to take a break [...]

We’re hosting our annual Kwanzaa Celebration early this year so that you can learn all about it, and then go home and observe the holiday on your own. Every year the Holiday Season is filled with shows, activities, shopping and a lot of hustle and bustle. Lakeland has so many activities that it is often hard to keep track. I have tried to begin a list of various activities put on by different entertainment venues or art groups in town. I say begin because I am sure to have missed a few. If your group has an event please comment, and I will add the event to the running list. Also if you know an event is a must then please comment so others will be sure to attend. Already I am excited, yet tired, about thinking of all that is happening!
Yesterday, as many people experienced, was Politics on the Park. The event was hosted by The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and is put on every two years. The public, aka free event, was kicked off by Charlie Crist speaking on behalf of McCain/Palin and Command Sergeant Major Michele Jones on behalf of Obama/Biden. Then throughout the night local officials offered their stump speeches. I was surprised that almost every candidate had a cheat sheet they were speaking from. At this point in the election season I thought candidates would be able to speak from their heart. I suppose they might've been a little nervous with the size of the crowd, but it seemed like few were interested in what the candidates were saying.

There are rumors afoot that Barack Obama is coming to Lakeland on Friday, perhaps for the First Friday gathering downtown. (I know what you’re thinking, but the source for this is not the woman I’m married to, who happens to organize First Friday. I’ve asked her, and she’s heard nothing official or unofficial from the [...]
