Three Lakeland Arts Orgs Nominated for Nickelodeon Parents’ Pick Awards

June 22, 2009

I recently found out that Polk Museum of Art had been nominated for the Nickelodeon Parents’ Pick Awards, and while I was doing research to find out exactly which categories the Museum was in, I discovered that two other Lakeland arts organizations have also been nominated for the Tampa area: Explorations V Childrens’ Museum and [...]

Studio 305 Presents Second Theatrical Production

June 10, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Studio 305, the new theater group operating out of Florida Dance Theatre on Main Street. I went to one of the performances of A Zoo Story, and I was really impressed. The story was enthralling and well presented. I’m not a good judge of stage acting since [...]

Art-O-Mat at PMoA

June 9, 2009

Today’s short but sweet post: Polk Museum of Art has a fun new “toy” in its lobby. It’s an Art-O-Mat — an old cigarette machine that has been refurbished to dispense original pieces of art for $5 each (+tax). Clark Whittington, the founder of Art-O-Mat will be at the Museum on Saturday, June 27, to talk [...]

June 1, 2009

Just for the fun of it, Polk Museum of Art has gotten together with Explorations V and the Downtown Lakeland Partnership to create lots of fun stuff for First Friday (this Friday, the 5th!). One of the highlights is the sidewalk art contest for teens and adults that PMoA is hosting on the South Kentucky block (between [...]

Studio 305 Opens With “Edgy” New Theatre Productions

May 29, 2009

There’s a new theatre company in town that’s operating a little under the radar right now, but hopes to grow into something larger. Studio 305 is a outgrowth of Florida Dance Theatre that intends to produce edgy, raw, sometimes controversial theatre pieces that give our local, talented actors a place to really stretch their talents. I [...]

Find Shelter in PMoA’s New Exhibition

May 20, 2009

Polk Museum of Art is opening three new exhibitions in June, and the first one is called Shelter. Since I've been having a hard time putting the concept behind this exhibition into my own words, I'm just going to quote PMoA's Curator of Art, Todd Behrens:

SummerJamz at Polk Theatre

May 19, 2009

So, I just found out about a really cool, innovative series of events happening this summer. I’d heard rumors of it, but this is the first I’d seen that showed it was a done deal. Polk Theatre and Florida Dance Theatre are teaming up with some serious local talent to present SummerJamz at Polk Theatre. [...]

Mayfaire Best of Show Winners

May 10, 2009

Since I was out walking around MIDFLORIDA Mayfaire by-the-Lake this morning, I figured I’d go ahead and take a shot of the two Best of Show Winners:

A Couple of Images from Mayfaire

May 9, 2009

Just a couple of shots I’ve taken so far at MIDFLORIDA Mayfaire by-the-Lake. It’s hot out here!! But the art is great and the food smells wonderful. I’m actually debating between a couple of necklaces…

It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Mayfaire…

May 8, 2009

Just a quick cruise around Lake Morton on the back of a golf cart got me these images. Now I have to stay out of the sun because I forgot my sunscreen!

PMoA Taking Registration for SummerArt Camp for Kids

May 6, 2009

It's that time of year! People with kids are looking at the looming summer vacation and thinking, "What the heck am I going to do with them for three months?!" Never fear, several local arts organizations have the answer, and Polk Museum of Art is one of those. SummerArt Camp is a must for any child who loves drawing, painting, sculpture, or photography.

PMoA’s Executive Director to Critique Local Artists at May View & Review

May 1, 2009

If  you know Daniel E. Stetson, Polk Museum of Art’s Executive Director, you know that using the word “talkative” to describe him is an understatement. The man is extremely passionate about art and the arts, but ironically, he’s often very reluctant to review or give criticism of artists’ work. So, it’s a rare and exciting treat to know that he has agreed [...]

Endure Excitement Around PMoA Today

April 28, 2009

As I was coming in to work this morning, I got to the end of College Street and was greeted by film crews and a blocked road. And then, in the Museum’s parking lot, this scene: Endure has plopped itself on Palmetto for a couple of days and they’re using PMoA’s parking lot for some of [...]

ISO Presents Its Cookie Concert on Sunday

April 24, 2009

For some reason when I posted yesterday about the weekend’s events, I had it in my head that the Imperial Symphony Orchestra’s Cookie Concert was on this coming Tuesday. Probably because many of their concerts are on Tuesdays, but not this one! So, to make up for my oversight, here’s the flyer and a link [...]
