Flying Tigers Split Doubleheader with Threshers

Gustavo Nunez went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in while Francisco Martinez had two hits and scored two runs as Lakeland downed Clearwater 9-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Monday in Clearwater. The Flying Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run homer by Daniel Fields and added two more runs in the third and then erupted for five runs in the seventh inning, Jacob Turner got the win going five innings while holding the Threshers to two hits. Following the second game of the twin-bill, Lakeland will play Tuesday at Clearwater at 7 pm.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the sixth inning, Jordan Lennerton clubbed a three-run homer while John Murrian hit a solo shot to cap a four-run sixth inning, but it was all for naught as Clearwater scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Flying Tigers 6-4 and earn a split of a doubleheader on Monday. Lakeland will play Tuesday in Clearwater at 7 pm and return home on Wednesday to face Brevard County.

Lakeland Blanks Clearwater 6-0

Jon Kibler and Jay Voss combined to strike out nine and shutout Clearwater as Lakeland blanked the Threshers 6-0 on Sunday. Kibler worked seven shutout innings with six strikeouts and has now not allowed a run in his last 14 innings pitched. Voss struck out three in his two innings of work. Francisco Martinez and Brett Wyatt provided the offense for Lakeland as both hit two-run homers in the game. Wyatt finished with three hits while Jordan Lennerton collected two hits including a double to score a pair of runs for the Flying Tigers. Philadelphia Phillie Chase Utley started at second base for Clearwater and was hitless in three at bats against Kibler. Lakeland plays a doubleheader on Monday at 5 p.m. at Clearwater.

Lakeland Loses Back and Forth Game to Manatees 7-4

Brevard County scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to win a see-saw battle with Lakeland by a 7-4 score in a game that was delayed 49 minutes by rain. The Manatees plated three runs in the second while Lakeland scored twice in the fourth on doubles by Brent Wyatt and Samir Rijo and a single by John Murrian. The Flying Tigers tied the game at 3-all in the fifth on a RBI-single by Jordan Lennerton. Brevard County then took lead right back with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame. Lakeland tied the game once again in the seventh on singles by Matt Mansilla and Wyatt. Rijo finished with three hits while Wyatt and Mansilla each had two hits. Lakeland now travels to Clearwater on Sunday to open a four-game series at 1 pm.

Lakeland on Other Side of Shutout – Defeats Clearwater 4-0

Samir Rijo hit a two-run homer and singled in a third run as Lakeland shut out Clearwater, 4-0, on Tuesday. Rijo’s homer, his first of the season, came with Francisco Martinez on board following his lead-off single. Rijo gave the Flying Tigers a 3-0 margin with a single to center to score Martinez, who walked, once again. Gustavo Nunez scored Lakeland’s final run in the eighth as he led off with a single and scored on Jordan Lennerton’s second hit of the night. Lennerton, who also doubled is now 10-for-28 (.429) in his last seven games. Jacob Turner tossed 5.1 scoreless innings for Lakeland allowing just two hits on five strikeouts. The Lakeland starting pitchers have not allowed a run in their last three games while the whole staff has allowed just one run over the last 30 innings. Lakeland and Clearwater conclude their three-games series Wednesday at 7 pm at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Clearwater Drops Lakeland 1-0 with Solo Homerun

Derrick Mitchell homered with two out in the top of the ninth as Clearwater got by Lakeland 1-0 on Monday. Jon Kibler tossed 7.0 shutout innings for Lakeland, scattering five hits on five strikeouts. Gustavo Nunez had two hits for Lakeland while Brett Wyatt and Francisco Martinez each had a single for the Flying Tigers’ four hits. The 1-0 decision was Lakeland’s 43rd one-run game and the Flying Tigers have a 20-23 mark in those games. The two clubs continue their three game series Tuesday at 7 pm at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Lakeland Squeaks by Charlotte 1-0

Adam Wilk tossed eight shutout innings, scattering six hits and striking out five as Lakeland squeaked by Charlotte, 1-0, in the series finale on Saturday in Port Charlotte. Wilk is now 9-4 on the season. Jay Voss worked a scoreless ninth to record his second save of the season. The Flying Tigers got their only run in the eighth inning on a safety squeeze by Brent Wyatt to score Gustavo Nunez who had led off the frame with a single. While Wilk was getting Charlotte out, Stone Crab pitcher Matt Moore was gunning down the Flying Tigers by striking out 13 in his six innings. Relievers recorded six more punch outs for 19 strikeouts on the night. Lakeland has Sunday off and will return to Joker Marchant Stadium on Monday to open a three-game home series with Clearwater.

Lakeland Traps Stone Crabs 5-4

Samir Rijo went 3-for-4 to drive in three runs while Jordan Lennerton also had three hits as Lakeland trapped the Stone Crabs 5-3 in Port Charlotte. The Flying Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second on four singles including RBI singles by Rijo and Gustavo Nunez. Lakeland later put up a three spot in the sixth on four more hits including a run-scoring single by Matt Mansilla and a two-run double by Rijo. Mark Sorensen picked up the win for the Flying Tigers working six innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Jared Gayhart worked the ninth and gave up a run but picked up his sixth save of the season. Lakeland concludes its four-game series at Charlotte with a 7 pm game on Saturday. The squad then has Sunday off and returns home for a four-game home stand beginning Monday at 7 pm against Clearwater.

Lakeland Rips St. Lucie 9-5 in Series Finale

Trailing 3-0, Lakeland erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning and held on to defeat St. Lucie 9-5 in the series finale on Tuesday. Jordan Lennerton led off the fifth with a double while Chris Sedon singled for two of only three hits in the inning for the Flying Tigers. Two outs later, Brent Wyatt was hit by a pitch and Francisco Martinez walked in a run. John Murrian then singled in two runs while two more walks gave Lakeland the 5-3 lead. The Mets came back with two in the bottom of the fifth, but Lakeland answered with three mores runs in the seventh on two more walks, an error, a single by Lennerton, his third hit of the night, followed an infield ground out for the final 9-5 margin. The Flying Tigers now head to Port Charlotte for a four-game series against the Stone Crabs starting Wednesday at 7 pm.

Lakeland Defeats St. Lucie 7-5

John Murrian drove in three runs to back the pitching of Mark Sorensen as Lakeland beat St. Lucie 7-5 on Sunday. Sorensen worked 6.0 innings and held the Mets to one unearned run on two hits while striking out six batters. Murrian drove in his first run in first inning with a single to score Gustavo Nunez. Lakeland added four runs in the fifth on a RBI singles by Jordan Lennerton and Brent Wyatt and a two-run double by Murrian. The Flying Tigers added a solo run in the seventh on a single and stolen base by Billy Alvino and a single by Francisco Martinez. Lakeland’s final run came in the ninth on a solo homer by Nunez. The two teams continue their four-game series Monday at St. Lucie at 7:05 pm.

St. Lucie scored three runs in the sixth inning to down Lakeland 4-1 and snap a ten-game losing streak. The Flying Tigers scored one run in the top of the sixth as Francisco Martinez led off with a walk, moved to third on a single by Samir Rijo and then scored on a single by Matt Mansilla. Mansilla, Gustavo Nunez and Chris Sedon all have two hits each for Lakeland. The Flying Tigers continue their four-game series Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at St. Lucie.
