Juaner Aquasvivas singled home Jordan Lennerton as Lakeland downed Dunedin 2-1 in 17 innings. After Dunedin had scored in the top of the 17th, Gustavo Nunez led off the bottom half with a walk, Lennerton followed with a single with Nunez scoring under the tag on a single to right by Daniel Fields. Lakeland starter Cole Nelson tossed 7.0 innings of no-hit ball while Bruce Rondon and Matt Little each followed with two more no-hit innings. Wilfredo Ramirez threw an additional two no-hit innings before surrendering a 1-out single in the top of the 14th to break up the no-hitter. Lakeland drew 649 to the game to set an all-time franchise single season attendance record with 61,455, eclipsing the old mark of 61,255 set in 1987. Dunedin scored a solo run in the top of the 10th to defeat Lakeland 4-3 in extra innings on Tuesday. Lakeland took a 2-0 lead in the second as Chris Sedon led off the inning with his second homer of the year and two outs later, Gustavo Nunez tripled and scored on Pat McKenna's double. After Dunedin added solo runs in the 5th, 6th and 8th innings, the Flying Tigers tied it in the bottom of the 8th on a RBI single by Daniel Fields. Jordan Lennerton hit three doubles in the contest for Lakeland. Mark Sorensen worked 6.0 strong innings, giving up two runs, one earned while striking out eight. Newcomers Gabriel Purroy and Luis Castillo combined for five of Lakeland's 10 hits, but the Flying Tigers could manage just one run in falling 6-1 to Daytona in the final road game of the season for Lakeland. Purroy, playing in just his third game for Lakeland, went 3-for-4 while Castillo, playing in his tenth game in a Flying Tiger uniform went 2-4. Luke Putkonen and Bruce Rondon combined for a four-hit shutout as Lakeland blanked Daytona 3-0 on Saturday. Putkonen worked 7.2 innings and held the Cubs to four hits with four strikeouts. Rondon tossed the final 1.1 innings and struck out two to pick up his first save. Francisco Martinez provided the offense for Lakeland with three hits and drove in a run and scored one. Dunedin pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth without the benefit of a hit to record a 3-2 win over Lakeland in game one of a doubleheader. After the Blue Jays scored a run in the first, Lakeland tied the game on a Daniel Fields homer in the second. The Flying Tigers then went ahead 2-1 on Chris Sedon's first home run of the year. It was the second straight game Lakeland has scored all of its runs on solo home runs. Chad Nelson made his Lakeland debut working five innings to hold Dunedin to just one hit on four strikeouts. Shawn Teufel, Michael Torrealba, and Dan Gentzler combined on a four-hit shutout as Lakeland downed Dunedin 3-0 to earn a split of a doubleheader played Wednesday. Teufel, making his first Lakeland start, tossed 2.1 no-hit innings and struck out four of the first six batters he faced. Torrealba came on in relief and worked 2.2 innings, allowing three hits to get the win. Gentzler gave up one hit in the final two innings to record his first save. Pat McKenna and Francisco Martinez, batting in the 1-2 slots, combined for Lakeland's four hits and three runs in the seven-inning contest. Daniel Fields and Bryan Holaday each homered while Mark Sorensen and Jared Gayhart combined on a two-hit shutout as Lakeland blanked Dunedin 2-0 in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. Field's home run, his seventh of the season, was over the right center field on a 1-2 pitch and came with one out in the second. Holaday's blast came on the second pitch he saw to lead off the fourth inning and was deposited over the left center field fence. Sorensen got the win for the Flying Tigers going six innings and holding Dunedin to two hits on five strikeouts. Gayhart came on in the seventh inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced to pick up his ninth save of the season. One day after shutting out Lakeland 4-0, the Tampa Yankees held the Flying Tigers to 1 run in each game in sweeping Lakeland in a doubleheader on Sunday, winning 4-1 and 8-1. The Flying Tigers were held to four hits in game one including a pair of singles by Jordan Lennerton and doubles by Gustavo Nunez and Kyle Peter. Lennerton homered and doubled in game two while Daniel Fields added a pair of base hits as Lakeland totalled six hits. Jacob Turner tossed struck out seven over five shutout innings, but the effort was wasted as the bullpen had a rare collapse allowing Tampa to score four times for a 4-0 loss to the Yankees. Tampa outhit Lakeland 12-4 as the Yankees shutout the Flying Tigers for the fifth time this season. Jordan Lennerton was held hitless in three at bats to see his hit streak snapped at ten games. The Flying Tigers and the Yankees will see quite a bit of each other over the weekend, playing five games between tonight and Monday. Thanks to rainouts on June 28 and 30 in Tampa, the two clubs will play doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday. Sunday's DH in Tampa will begin at 1 p.m. while Monday's twin-bill to be played in Lakeland, will get underway at 5 p.m. Both doubleheaders will be two seven-inning contests....
Jordan Lennerton hit a home run to left-center field with one out in the top of the tenth as Lakeland held off Brevard County 5-4 in extra innings on Friday. It was Lennerton's second extra-inning, game winning homer in the last three games and his fourth homer in the last five games. The Flying Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Daniel Fields. Lakeland then extended its lead to 4-0 with two runs in the fourth. Brevard County rallied back and tied the game with a solo run in the eight inning. Lennerton finished 3x5 while Fields had two hits. Jared Gayhart took the win with two shutouts innings pitched. Brevard County took advantage of a pair of early Lakeland errors to score four unearned runs enroute to a 5-2 win over Lakeland on Thursday. After the Manatees scored twice in the first, Lakeland tied it in the bottom of the inning on single by Gustavo Nunez and a double by Jordan Lennerton coupled with a bases-loaded walk by Samir Rijo. Lennerton's double extended his hit streak to ten games. The Flying Tigers managed just three singles the rest of the contest. Lakeland erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to record a 9-2 win over Brevard County at home on Tuesday. Jordan Lennerton homered to lead off the inning - his third straight game with a home run - while John Murrian doubled and Francisco Martinez singled. Daniel Fields, Chris White and Matt Mansilla each then walked before Chris Sedon singled to drive in two more runs. Two outs and a walk later, Murrian collected his second hit of the inning to drive in a run. After another walk, Fields singled in two more runs for the final 9-2 margin. Mark Sorensen got the win, working 7.1 innings and holding the Manatees to two first inning runs. The same two clubs play again Wednesday at home at 7 pm. Jordan Lennerton homered on an 0-1 pitch to lead off the 14th inning and lift Lakeland to a 3-2 win over Clearwater. Lakeland took a 1-0 lead in the first as Gustavo Nunez singled, stole second and scored on a double by Brent Wyatt. The Threshers then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a Steve Susdorf two-run homer. Francisco Martinez later tied the game at 2-all in the fifth for Lakeland with a single to score Nunez who had earlier singled. Nunez finished with three hits for the Flying Tigers while Wyatt and Daniel Fields each had two hits. The contest, which ended just after midnight, took 4:16 to play and included a 47 minute rain delay in the 10th inning. Bio: Wayne Koehler has worked in the Florida State League since 1983. He began as the Public Address Announcer for the Winter Haven Red Sox from 1983-84 before moving to the Lakeland press box in 1985-86 as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune. Koehler then moved to the game operations staff in 1987 and has worked in some capacity ever since including 11 seasons as the PA voice of the Tigers. Currently he is a statistical reporter for Minor League Baseball covering the Flying Tigers. His "day job" is as assistant webmaster and staff photographer for Florida Southern College where he has worked since his graduation from the college in 1983. He spend 15 of those years as the college's director of sports information. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Koehler grew up in St. Petersburg and moved to Lakeland in 1981.
