Camper Scamper to Benefit Summer Camp Programming
Special to Lakeland Local by: Beth Sherling
Memories of childhood summers often revolve around summer camp. We tell stories about day camps and away camps and how we made new friends and discovered new talents. Swimming, arts and crafts, field trips to cool destinations are all strong camp memories.Campers turned parents see summer camp not as a luxury but a necessity. It’s a place to keep their kids active and safe. With those memories and needs in mind, the City of Lakeland and the Lakeland Family YMCA are presenting the Inaugural Camper Scamper 5k March 23 at Lake Hollingsworth. This fun community event will direct proceeds to benefit the City of Lakeland and YMCA summer camp programs.
The evening starts at 5:15 with activities that include the Duck Chuck. In case that event doesn’t sound familiar, let’s just say it involves chucking a duck, of the rubber ducky variety, at a swan paddle boat for $1 a duck. Proceeds to benefit the Summer Camp program, of course.
There are a trio of races for runners of all ages. The Kids Run starts at 6:30pm and the 5K immediately follows at 6:45pm. Awards will be given, but you don’t have to be a world class runner to enjoy the fun.
Additionally, there will be a Mascot race involving some of our favorite local celebrity mascots: Watson (Lakeland Electric), Mocsie (Florida Southern College), Ace (Lakeland Flying Tigers), Morton (City of Lakeland Parks & Recreation), and the Chick-fil-A cow.
Registration for the 5k prior to the event is $20. (Entry fee is $25 day of the race.) Participants can register in person at Kelly Recreation Complex (404 Imperial Blvd.), Coleman-Bush Building (1104 MLK Jr. Ave), Simpson Park Community Center (1125 MLK Jr. Ave.), or the Lake Mirror Complex (121 S. Lake Ave.). Registration is also available online. More information can be found at www.lakelandgov.net/parkrec or (863) 834-3351.
