Start Off 2012 With a Tweetup

On January 18, 2007 five people got together at a local coffeehouse to discuss social media. (Back then they called it “blogging.”) Twitter was a few months old, part of Odeo* and Facebook had only opened their doors to the general public four months earlier. It was the first Polk County wide meeting of people who communicated with each other primarily through social media. Two of the five worked in traditional media and one wrote what was affectionately called a “Mommy Blog.”

Almost five years to the day later, there are plans to hold another meeting. No need for emails back-and-forth to find a place, date and time. This one started with a tweet request from Lakelander Sara Rosinsky. A moment later a location was suggested, quickly seconded, and the retweets started flying. It looks like this social media meeting is guaranteed to attract more than five people.

On January 19, 2012 from 6pm until 9pm at La Porta Rossa in Lakeland, Polk County lovers of social media are invited to a (Tweetup, Facebook Event) get-together to discuss, well, pretty much anything save the nature of social media and its impact on the local news scene.

You don’t need to RSVP to come to the meeting, but the special events room holds about 30, so you may want to get there early. (Though, if the room gets packed, I bet the extras could start having dinner at La Porta Rossa.)

Good lord, five years. I miss Vivian, too. Brandt M. would have liked her stuff. They had/have similar interests.

Oh, no worries. I figured it was a compliment. I’ve got it penciled in my calendar, so long as nothing crazy pops up.
