Music To Exorcise Evil Spirits By

Elvis

Maybe it’s because my mama listened to too much Elvis music while I was in the womb.

Maybe it’s because during the five years I lived in Memphis, TN I was forever bewitched by that beacon of Americana, Graceland.

Or maybe it has something to do with the bizarre obsession I’ve had with the film colors used in those old Elvis movies.

All of these could easily explain my fascination with and love for the Elvis Presley song, ‘Rubberneckin’.  But to be honest, I think it has more to do with Mary Tylor Moore’s description of the song in the movie, ‘Changing Habit’.  Upon hearing this tune, Moore’s character, Sister Gallagher, dubs it “Music to exorcise evil spirits by”.  I’m thinking this is why every time I hear this song I am overcome with the need to dance.  No doubt, I’m filled with evil spirits.  Ironically, I was reminded of this curse many times while I lived in Memphis.  Maybe it is these exact spirits that begin stirring when this song begins.  I can’t think of a better way to exorcise them.  Rest assured, if you can listen to this song without bobbing your head, you are most likely clean of the devil.

Enjoy your weekend, Lakeland!

  1. The again, it works just as well if she said “Music to exercise evil spirits by.” That way, you just tire them out for a few hours.

  2. Oh yeah Elvis rocked then and still does. I sang one of his songs three weeks ago in church.
