Perennial minor league manager Dave Huppert was announced today as the new manager of the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Huppert replaced Andy Barkett who left the Flying Tigers earlier this month to manage the AA Jacksonville Suns.
Huppert has managed 21 seasons in the minor leagues in the Brewers, White Sox, Marlins, Expos and Phillies organizations. This is his first stint with a Detroit Tigers club. Twice named Minor League Manager of the Year, Huppert led Lakewood to the South Atlantic League championship in 2006 and the Clearwater Threshers to the 2007 Florida State League championship. In 2008, Huppert was promoted to become the first manager of the Phillies’ AAA team, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He finished with a three season 184-247 record. With 1473 wins, Huppert is third in all-time wins for a minor league manager.
