The 2010 Lakeland Flying Tigers opening day roster was announced last night. Ten players from last year’s team will join with nine top ten draft picks. The Flying Tigers will start the season with 14 pitchers, nine infielders and five outfields; including three players will start the season on the disabled list. See the full roster.
Returning are Charlie Furbush (led pitchers with 23 starts), Scott Green (team leading 11 saves), Chris White (14 stolen bases and 75 hits), and Kody Kaiser (missed most of 2009 due to a shoulder sprain).
Joining the team this year are a pair of highly-touted prospects from the Midwest League. Baseball America rated starting Pitcher Casey Crosby the best pitching prospect in the league and shortstop Gustavo Nunez the best defensive infielder in the Tigers organization.
Four players drafted by the Detroit Tigers last June make the Florida League Flying Tigers: Austin Wood (5th round), John Murrian (9th round), Adam Wilk (11th round) and Rawley Bishop (19th round).
Manager Andy Barkett returns with to the club with hitting coach Larry Herndon and pitching coach Joe Coleman.
The Flying Tigers take on Southeastern University 6 pm Wednesday April 7th in a special exhibition game that features special $2 seating. On April 9th the Flying Tigers home opener is against the defending Florida State League champions Tampa Yankees. Gates open at 5:30. The first 1,500 fans will receive a 2010 Flying Tigers magnet schedule.
