The news out of Polk Museum of Art today is that they have hired a new Curator of Art. Okay, so maybe I’ve had insider information and I’ve known this for a couple of weeks, but now that the press release is out in the world, I can post it here!
Adam Justice will be joining the Museum’s staff in January. He has a masters degree in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is also a practicing artist (although he says he doesn’t show his work). For part of his interview, Adam gave a presentation about an exhibition he presented at the William King Museum in Abdington, Virginia. It was a juxtaposition of artwork by three artists: one Christian, one Jew, one Muslim. At the presentation, he mentioned that he had been a little wary of negative reactions to the exhibition in his conservative town, but he found that people loved the show. I’m going to step outside of my official PMoA role for a moment and say that, for me, personally, creating an exhibition like that showed that he was willing to push the boundaries of his community a little bit, and I hope that he brings some of that chutzpah here too!
