Annual Christmas Parade Chair Pictures

DSC_5064Since moving to Lakeland I’ve been amused by the annual scramble to place chairs on the Christmas Parade route. I’ve never lived anywhere that allowed people to save spots on a parade route.

Each year I’ve taken the time to go shoot a photo on parade morning. This year I made it to Main and Kentucky at 7:30 am to find the street already lined with chairs. Plastic chairs, canvas chairs, child size chairs, and a few that looked like La-Z-Boys.

Stopping by Black and Brew for a morning tea, I found a man who had a better photo. Don Skellenger took the photo below with his Blackberry.

That’s 3am in Downtown Lakeland and those are his chairs. Skellenger lives downtown and wanted a prime spot for viewing the parade with his 3 year-old grandson. The young man is coming in from St. Petersburg. Skellenger said he didn’t see another chair setter until 4 am. Amateurs.

Downtown streets close at 5pm today. The parade starts at 7pm. If you want to see where to go set your chair check out the route on the Lakeland City website.

  1. Impressive that no one messes with them (i.e. steals them!). Hooray for the community spirit!

  4. I haven’t been able to see one of Lakeland” fine Christmas Parades. We are “Snowbirds” and are not able to go South, in time to see the parade. But each year we hear from our son & his wife how great they are! Keep up the good work!
