For those who aren’t at home, this is the email that went out this morning that the Polk County Schools sent and followed up with robo-calls to all parents:

First Confirmed New Flu Case in Polk

This is Dr. Haight with the Health Department.

Confirmed new flu infections have been reported from many other communities.

This has been a highly contagious but so far mild flu infection.

We have found the first confirmed Polk County case of this new flu in a 9 year old who has already fully recovered.

The child’s family followed all the recommendations to seek medical attention for fever and flu like symptoms. The child stayed out of school the recommended time while fully recovering.

This child attends Medulla Elementary School in Lakeland and we are in close communication with the school.

Our recommendation is that school and other events go forward as scheduled with the same advice to stay home if you are sick and clean your hand frequently.

Sanitary measures continue to be taken to help ensure that going to school is safe.

Be prepared for next flu season when this same virus could return stronger than it is today.

For more information on how to prepare for next year, visit the web site www.pandemicflu.gov or go to your local library to access the internet.

Marion County also has confirmed cases – in and out of the public school system.
