Orlando Mayor: “The Forces of Evil [That’s Us] Have Won” in CSX Deal

The CSX deal absorbed a giant defeat on the floor of the Florida Senate this evening. See story here. How big? Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared: “The forces of evil have won.”

Now, this isn’t done. There’s one more day. Anything can happen. But just think about that line from Dyer for a second. “The forces of evil.” Really? Dude, it’s single crappy rail line made possible by a massive, destructive corporate giveaway to CSX that would harm everybody else. We are not talking about waterboarding here. Get a grip.

  1. “Mica, in fact, has predicted that SunRail’s defeat will be held against Florida because nearly $27 million in federal money has been spent buying land for stations and equipment.”

There’s this adage about counting chickens…

  3. One more day, and with any hope at all, this thing will be dead. Normally I would add “for good” at the end of that sentence. BUT, CSX could back off the liability language in the contract and the project would still move forward. I doubt that would happen but stranger things have… Depends on how bad CSX wants an immediate cash infusion or if they truly want to protect themselves from liability. We’ll see the if there is any political capital left in Orlando to strong arm CSX like they’ve been doing to Legislators the past few days.

  5. Thorn:

It won’t be for good. If the legislation goes down tomorrow, you are correct, other strange things may happen. I am particularly interested in what happens to the $23 million for the hub.

  7. The CSX FDOT love-fest will continue even if liability fails in the Senate on Friday. The only way to truly insure FDOT can’t waste our public funds on needless CSX corporate welfare, is for the budget makers (that will have to work an extra week to hammer out a budget) to end up taking all of FDOT’s reserve funds so that they have nothing left to pay CSX with. So keep writing and emailing and calling all the Senators and Representatives asking them to sweep in the surplus FDOT funds (including the $23 million Billy mentioned) into the general fund to be used for education, health care, public safety and more.

  9. I don’t oppose improved transportation, I just do NOT support SunRail as that improvement. I am also NOT pro-growth. Read the Population Explosion and you will see why and the fact that if you look at any community that does not allow the HUD HOUSING people to come in and trains installed are peaceful low crime communities.

There is no such thing as SMART growth. I believe growth should be suppressed or capped and quality of life should be what we are after.

What has happened on the corner of 17-92 and Lake Ave is a perfect example of a decision made in anticipation of the SunRail and now because after people took a HIGH RISK spending tax money to try to sell and idea the majority don’t want, we will be stuck with more unfilled units and office space.

This is NOT citizens faults, it is the people who are making the decisions.

It is too bad our leaders have to learn the hard way with OUR MONEY that we are opposed to what they are doing. The same leaders who call us THE ENEMY, as Buddy Dyer stated for the Orlando Sentinel to PRINT.

Orlando is NOT a megalopolis, let the megalopolis be Miami (who is modeling itself after NY and a lot of NY people live there)

Orlando would have to evict DISNEY WORLD to be what Buddy Dyer wants it to be.

I am not happy with the transportation (public that is) ssytem in Orlando and it can improve dramatically if the funds were used to improve it.

Other cities would have to catch up if SUNRAIL were approved, and it would take at least a decade for anyone to remotely benefit from it.

We would still have to make improvements on the bus system.

  11. Im glad you all didnt let CSX get what they wanted. They have ruined enough lives with their crooked dealings and shady treatment of employees.
The tragedy in Maryland where the CSX sales accountant that was transferred from his home in Jacksonville and ended up in $400k in debt and wound up taking the life of his family and self is proof, that CSX cares about CSX not human beings.
    Congratulations Lakeland!
