Mark Fidrych on MLBN at 1pm

At 1pm today, the Major League Baseball Network presents Detroit Tiger Mark “The Bird” Fidrych’s complete game against the New York Yankees from June 28, 1976. I won’t give away the score, but Tiger fans will enjoy the game.

I’m watching the game as I write this. Though he’d managed the Yankees for 11 years, Ralph Houk was in the middle of five years managing the Tigers. Meanwhile, Billy Martin had the Yankees helm. That year he’d take the Yanks to the World Series, but Tigers fans remembered Martin as Tigs manager from 71 to 73. He’d been fired in August of 73 for telling his pitchers to throw at batters.

I’d forgotten that Le Grande Orange played for the Tigers for a few years. Bob Uecker worked the game in the booth as the color/comedy man.

  1. I just walked in from the “office cafeteria” and saw this game on. My father was telling me how great “The Bird” was for the game back then. He was such an oddball but the dude could hurl.

Bob Uecker cracks a dandy at the start of the game when he describes how great the Yankee hitters are – something he should know a lot about as a career .200 hitter. Classic.

There is something to be said about the “rawness” of the broadcasts from that era. It seems that today’s telecasts are overdone with dazzling graphics, sounds effects, and announcers who think we tune in to hear them talk – uhmmm Tim McCarver. Ah, for the old days of satellite TV and the live feeds – no announcer, no stats, no sound effects – just baseball.

  3. I have tried for many years to find a film of one of his early games with detroit, but no luck. Do you know if there is anything available? thank you, Bud frazee.

  5. I bet MLBN will run this game again in the next day or so. They also had an interview with him just a couple of weeks ago.
