It may not be the same group, but sounds like someone has taken your advice on is waging the war (if such a strong word could possibly be used to describe a press conference) against divorce as well:

Hopefully they'll succeed and charge forward to other issues, and all these pesky freedoms I'm currently forced to enjoy will be a distant memory.

You may not have seen this before, but the day after the election, I announced that once a month I would do a post reminding Pastor Dennis that he's done nothing to protect marriage from hetero divorce until he signs up to lead a movement to repeal it. (I don't support such a thing, but I'm trying to make a point.) This was the second of those. The Warren issue just happened to come up. I don't expect to write much beyond the first paragraph for future editions. But that depends on what's going on at the time.

Billy,
Thank you for your thorough response. I'm a regular reader, albeit a new one, so I was not accustomed to seeing this issue addressed on Lakeland Local. While I think your local connection (Jay Dennis) is a thin one, and only used as an excuse to discuss the larger issue, I can see how you feel this is an important issue for many people in Lakeland.

I sure hope Chuck doesn't fire you though... I don't know what my husband and I would talk about over dinner. :)

A legitimate question, Jennifer. Here's my answer.

1) Jay Dennis is the pastor of Lakeland's First Baptist Church at the Mall. He was one of the founders of the Amendment 2 campaign in Florida. That alone makes this local.

2) Many, many gay people live in Lakeland. Several are my close friends, as I've written before. If you go back and look through my posts, this is hardly the first time I've tied this issue to its local applications. These attitudes and political decisions have real impact on real Lakeland people.

3) Cary McMullen is The Ledger's religion editor and has written about this issue quite a bit. If you are a regular reader, you will know that we often take up or comment upon discussions going on at other local media outlets.

4) I live here, and this issue is both interesting and important to me. From the beginning of my involvement with this blog, I've applied my interest and knowledge of national, international, cultural issues to my experience living here. And sometimes I point things out that may have no local tie whatsoever. And I'll contunue to do that until Chuck fires me.

<div>"Party identification, age, religiosity and political view had much bigger effects than race, gender or having gay and lesbian family and friends," said Patrick Egan of New York University"</div>

I respect your right to have these opinions, but what does this have to do with local, Lakeland issues? I read this blog to find out what it happening in Lakeland, not to read about CA laws and pastors. If I've misunderstood the purpose of this blog, please let me know so I might unsubscribe.
