Billy!

Your assessment is really interesting. Thanks for posting this. Also, I like your use of the word "kerfuffle".

We should lunch!

Cheers,

Billy, this quote in your article sums it up to me,
"There’s nothing wrong with objectivity, of course, except that it is often false. And I think many of our readers, of all ideological, political and cultural stripes are largely convinced, correctly, that we collectively and individually harbor any number of biases.
I saw these biases in play real-time recently helping a presidential candidate. If the writers and editorial boards would not be transparent about there biases and motivation, there may not be such vehement backlash against them.

[...] Excellent meditation on the current state of journalism and news organizations by Billy Townsend at Lakeland Local. Recommended. “It’s not newspapers that face a very real death very soon - it’s institutional journalism, the centralized daily coverage of city hall and crime and whose daughter is singing at Carnegie Hall and whose Little League team is undefeated.” [...]

Townsend hits the nail on the head!

Astute analysis of what's wrong with journalism, and the grim prospects for the future. I shudder to think about the long-term effects of this hellish trend.

Great to see such a robust blogging community springing to life in my old hometown.

Billy
Nice column, pal. My response to Janet Coats' claim to save The Tampa Tribune, is this: Why, Janet, are you abandoning all of your paper's institutional knowledge and memory? The Tribune, TBO and Channel 8 will soon coalesce into reactive soundbites at the expense of proactive, enterprising journalism. Need proof? Pick up the Sunday paper.

Billy:

I miss your writing and I am glad that you have joined Lakeland Local on a regular basis. That is a very interesting perspective that you have on print newspapers. I think that your take on a sustainable news model will be on us sooner than later. Also, with the other "reporters" that have joined Lakeland Local, this site is well on its way. Tight work.
