Ditch the Lakeland Police Department?

Arecent letter in The Ledger suggested the Lakeland Police Department be disbanded and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office take over policing the city.

So we trade an award winning police department that answers to the citizens of the largest city in Polk County to become just another division of a county police department?

No thanks.

Mr. Davis cited some numbers in population and budget. Lakeland’s population actually is closer to 100,000 (more if you count non-residents who work here). That would come to about $300 per person. In Polk County, the numbers I found on the sheriff’s website state the 2004/2005 budget was $104,389,434 and the office was responsible for 330,596 citizens. That’s $315.76 per person. I don’t see a great savings there. Do you?

Finally, while Mr. Davis believes “the proper approach is to model after corporate America,” I certainly don’t want to outsource the protection of my family to the lowest bidder.

  3. While I feel personal opinions are fine for comments, I don’t approve anonymous comments. The software is supposed to not even pass through such comments.

However, I received one for this entry. It was a good comment, but unsigned. I’m asking for the commenter to please send me their email address.

Of course, based on where the comment originated I’ll understand if they don’t. If I don’t get an answer by Sunday I’ll add only the number information to my original post.

If this comment makes little sense…you’re not the person I’m talking about. :)

  5. I watched Inside Edition Oct. 1,2007, and was very upset to think that The Police do not remove people’s name when the are unjustly accused of a violation as was Comm. Randy Wilkerson was on a DUI charge. I shop in Lakeland and probably will never do that again, because this could happen to anyone. Maybe you should rethink this practice.

  7. To Wauline Susie—-the Sheriff’s Dept. posts and maintains booking photos of people arrested. It has nothing to do with Lakeland PD.
