  1. Chuck – I know our Parks and Rec personnel often take kids participating in summer rec programs to local baseball games. They also liaison quite a bit with Major League Baseball due to the year-round activity at Tigertown, so there are a variety of reasons as to why this vehicle is at The Trop.

Though I do not have the specific answer for you, I did pose the question to some leaders at our Parks Department to explain this matter further. I will keep you posted to avoid any misperception by someone who might think the vehicle is there for personal or unofficial reasons.

  3. Bill, I’m sorry for any confusion. I was being literal. I wrote that post from my cameraphone. I often write about Lakeland as seen outside our community.

The event was the Angels-Devil Rays game. Now, I love baseball. I try to promote it when I can. Normally, a Devil Rays game wouldn’t be something I’d cover here at Lakeland Local, but I found a Lakeland angle as I left.

It was “parks and rec day” at the ballpark. Parks and rec programs from all over Tampa Bay brought kids to see the game.

As I left, I saw a Lakeland parks and rec car there and shot a pic to show that Lakeland made a showing. I knew I wasn’t going to be home to upload my game photos for a few days, but I can post to Lakeland Local from my cameraphone. Unlike my daughter, I attempt to spell out every word. It takes me minutes rather than seconds though, and I keep my messages short.

When I wrote: “It’s park and rec day with the Devil Rays.” I meant that literally. Maybe quotes around “parks and rec” might have helped, but even that could be misread.

Sorry if there’s any confusion. I was just happy to think Lakeland kids got to see a game.

I’ll make a promise. If I ever see a city truck or official doing something I believe is a violation of city rules I won’t just publish a picture. I’ll call the department myself….and I’ll post the whole story on this site.

  5. Chuck ~

Thank you very much for the quick response to my comment. You have always been up front in your posts by clearly saying what’s on your mind. I guess after a couple of decades in the government business, however, I realize that people sometimes see a photo like yours and immediately wonder if the city employees are goofing off without knowing the rest of the story. Call me hypersensitive in these regards, but experience is a great teacher!

Please keep up the tremendous work you are doing in showcasing our community with Lakeland Local. It is a great city in which to live and raise a family. Your efforts help us convey that message everywhere.

    Thnx again…
