Ryan Skipper Vigil

April 11th, 2007 4:08 pm | by Chuck Welch

I have been trying hard to keep this site focused on Lakeland. When I bring up Polk County, it’s because there is a connection to the city. I leave Winter Haven and Polk County news to the capable hands of Josh Hallett at Empirical Polk.

But, posts at the Pensito Review are proving a point about local newspapers. The public hasn’t written them off yet. The newspaper is where we expect to find local news. Not 60 Seconds of Local News at Six. We’re looking for The Ledger to cover the CSX story and Pensito Review is asking why the Ledger hasn’t mentioned the vigils for Ryan Skipper to be held Saturday in 13 Florida cities and Washington, D.C.

There isn’t a vigil planned for Lakeland, but here’s the information for Winter Haven:

Sat. April 14, 1:00 PM
Central Park
Central Ave at 4th and 5th Streets, Winter Haven
Russell Patterson, 813-849-3919, russ@eqfl.org

Ryan was a very good friend of mine, as a matter of a fact he was one of the first friends that introduced me to the GLBS scene in Lakeland.
I am outraiged at how the media portrayed this young man who could have had anyone, as this loner who was out trolling for men. The police department and the media almost made it out that he was asking for this, when in actuality hew was prayed apon and victomised by these ignorant young men who brutally discarded him. In my opion he was victomised again by the media.
