Frances Langford

langford.jpgShe was the Sweetheart of the Fighting Front and today would have been Frances Langford‘s 94th birthday. The singer/comedian from Lakeland was best known for introducing “I’m in the Mood for Love” and radio’s The Bickersons.

NPR’s All Things Considered had a very nice report when she passed almost two years ago. There is a memory book for her at Legacy.com.

Though the Lake Mirror Promenade was once dedicated as the Frances Langford Promenade, I couldn’t find the plaque in all the current construction. However, if you are in Hollywood, California you can find her star on the Walk of Fame at Vine St. and Sunset Blvd.

With the Lakeland Flying Tigers team introduction tonight and the opening game tomorrow, I really hope there is some mention of Ms Langford, and maybe a song or two. Though I doubt “I’m in the Mood for Love” will get aired.

Though, maybe they could play it for the first manager/umpire argument?

Update: Thanks to the staff at the Lakeland Library Local History Department I found out the promenade was dedicated on March 30, 1946. The marker was probably removed during the 80s.
